GURUGRAM, Haryana — A 31-year-old man allegedly shot a 30-year-old woman in Gurugram’s Dhundahera area after she rejected his marriage proposal and ceased communication, police said on Thursday. The accused was apprehended on the spot along with a country-made pistol.
Incident and Arrest
According to the Gurugram Police, officers from Udyog Vihar police station received a PCR call around 10 a.m. reporting gunfire in the Dhundahera-Udyog Vihar industrial corridor. On reaching the scene, they found the woman, identified as Shivangi (30) from Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, with a bullet wound in her shoulder.
The accused, identified as Vipin (31) of Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested at the spot. Police recovered a country-made pistol which he allegedly used in the shooting.
Police allege that Vipin and the victim had known each other for around two years. He had reportedly proposed marriage two weeks earlier, and when she declined the offer and stopped communicating, he confronted her and opened fire.
Background and Motive
Investigators say that the relationship between Vipin and Shivangi had deteriorated after the proposal was rejected. “We were friends for some time. Then she cut off communication. I thought it was just a misunderstanding of friendship,” said Vipin during initial questioning, according to police sources.
The incident has prompted renewed focus on the risk of escalation in cases where one person misinterprets friendship or acquaintance for romantic intent. Legal experts note that delayed action in such scenarios often increases the risk of violence.
Legal Charges and Police Response
An FIR has been filed under sections including attempted murder and violations of the Arms Act, as the firearm used was unlicensed.
Gurugram Police Commissioner stated that the accused is being interrogated and that the weapon’s origin and path will be thoroughly examined to determine how he obtained it. Additional surveillance footage and mobile-call logs are being reviewed.
What This Means for Public Safety
The incident underscores broader issues of personal safety, particularly for young women living away from their hometowns in fast-growing cities like Gurugram. Security analysts suggest that early warning mechanisms — including refusal of unwanted proposals, clear boundaries, and prompt reporting of harassment — are vital for prevention.
Residents in the Dhundahera area expressed concern over how quickly the situation escalated. One local resident said: “It seemed like a misunderstanding turned dangerous in minutes. It reminds us to be cautious about friends and relationships we assume are safe.”
