On Friday, September 5, 2025, Tesla achieved a significant milestone in its Indian operations by delivering its first Model Y electric vehicle (EV) to Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik. The handover took place at Tesla’s Experience Centre located in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai, marking the company’s official entry into the Indian EV market.

Model Y Specifications and Pricing

The Model Y is available in two variants:

• Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): Offers a range of 500 km and is priced at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom).
• Long Range RWD: Provides a range of 622 km, priced at ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom).

Both variants feature a top speed of 201 km/h, 19-inch crossflow alloys, and support Tesla’s Supercharging network, enabling up to 267 km of range in 15 minutes. The vehicles are manufactured in Shanghai and Berlin to meet Indian market specifications.

Minister Sarnaik’s Vision for EV Adoption

Minister Sarnaik expressed his commitment to promoting sustainable transportation, stating, “I have taken delivery of the Tesla to spread awareness about electric mobility among citizens, especially the younger generation.” He plans to gift the vehicle to his grandson as a symbolic gesture to encourage EV adoption. Sarnaik emphasized that Maharashtra aims to lead in EV adoption, aligning with India’s clean mobility vision.

Tesla’s Expansion Plans in India

Since the launch of its first showroom in Mumbai on July 15, 2025, Tesla has received over 600 bookings for the Model Y, primarily from Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. The company plans to ship between 350 and 500 cars to India this year, with deliveries expected to commence in the coming week. Tesla is also expanding its infrastructure, including setting up charging stations and additional experience centers across the country.
